A Journey through my life: Ages 18 to 80

by C. D.

The story of my life unfolds like a book, each page representing countless experiences, lessons, and memories. Between the ages of 18 and 80, my life has been filled with significant milestones, personal growth, and transformations. Here's a glimpse into how my life evolved, decade by decade.

Age 18-30: The Era of Exploration

At age 18, the world was considered to be as a vast expanse of opportunities. It was a time of exploration, both academically and personally. Fresh out of secondary school, my family encouraged me to enroll into a university to study and pursue a medical course. Unfortunately with the sudden passing away of my father and lack of funds, I picked up radio engineering instead, embarking on a journey that was as much about learning as it was about self-discovery.

My career began to take shape in my mid-20s as I stepped into the commercial world and established a Radio shop. Those years were marked by a series of firsts.. my first business venture, and perhaps my first serious relationship. Travel became a passion but never materialized. However, due to political conditions, I migrated to Hong Kong from Burma.

Age 30-40: Building stability

My 30’s turned out to be about establishing stability. This decade brought about marriage and the beginning of a family, and raising children became a central theme.  I established a trading company and focused on building financial security. This was extremely difficult time of my life, as I had to restart from scratch after migration and I had to toil away for a few years. With all the stress to ensure success and stability, in order to support and take care of my family, I gradually started losing my hair!

Age 40-50: Reflection

During this decade, with all the hard work and luck riding on my back, I reached the peak of my career. Experience and expertise lead to travel extensively for business and hiring more staff to run the business and keep it going smoothly.

This was also a time for reflection. As children grew and become independent, there was more time to focus on personal goals. The importance of health and well-being also became more apparent.

Age 50-60: Embracing Change and Legacy

My 50’s brought about significant changes. With children married, there was a newfound freedom. Contrast to a hectic busy life in the past, I started to relax and selfishly took care of myself.

Thoughts often turn to legacy, hoping my children would continue to be lovable and take care of me and my wife as we age.

Age 60-70: Wisdom and Contentment

My 60s was seen as a period of wisdom and contentment. Considering retirement could allow for more leisure and the opportunity to pursue my lifelong interests, but I couldn’t bring myself to do that as I continued to enjoy my work which kept me alive and kicking.  I also found joy in spending time with grandchildren.

Age-related medical conditions became a significant focus too, with an emphasis on maintaining a healthy lifestyle to enjoy my years to the fullest.

Age 70-80: Reflection and Gratitude

In my 70s and 80s, my life has slowed down but remained rich in experiences. This is a time for reflection, sharing stories, and passing down wisdom to younger generations. There is a profound appreciation for the life lived and the experiences shared with loved ones especially my wife to whom I am married for 54 years. She has always been by my side and supportive.

I try to cultivate gratitude, finding joy in simple pleasures and the company of family and friends. As I reflect on a life well-lived, there is a sense of fulfillment and peace. Retirement will only come when I am eventually unable to move from my bed.

Conclusion

The journey from 18 to 80 has been filled with trials and triumphs, each decade offering its own unique experiences and lessons. It is a journey of growth, resilience, and joy, woven together by the threads of love, family, and friendship. As I look back on this journey, I am reminded that every moment is precious and every experience a chapter in the beautiful story of life.
